My current practice explores the boundary between painting and sculpture. Recently, I have been creating wall-hanging sculptures that reference both Eastern and Western aesthetics through a lens of minimalism, beauty and reduction. Most notably I’m drawn to Western Ideas of illumination and light, and Eastern ideas that focus on shadow and subtlety. This is referenced physically through the application of gold leaf and the subtle curves or tapered edges within my works. The use of black is prominent throughout my work because I find it is the most reduced essence of what colour can be. For me, black acts as the materialisation of the void.
Moving between 2-D and 3-D is a natural part of my creative process. This allows me to fully render the subjects and ideas that I’m interested in as well as expanding the range of creative possibilities available. My sculptural works are an attempt at perfection and beauty. For me this is closely related to the passage of time, as the experience of perfection is subjective and only reveals itself in certain moments. I aim to create something which can act as a catalyst for spiritual experience through art by curating a moment in time that can give way to the uplifting experience of the beautiful and one that attempts to reveal the idea of perfection.
